Santa Monica, California: Under the bright lights of Santa Monica, a new frontrunner emerged in the awards season race. Sean Baker’s Anora swept the Independent Spirit Awards, claiming Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actor for Mikey Madison. The gripping drama about a Brooklyn sex worker’s whirlwind affair with a Russian oligarch’s son now stands as a formidable contender for the Oscars.

The Spirit Awards, known for championing bold, independent cinema, unfolded with moments of celebration and reflection. Kieran Culkin, widely tipped for Oscar glory, won Best Supporting Performance for A Real Pain, while Jesse Eisenberg’s screenplay for the same film earned him another trophy. Meanwhile, No Other Land, a powerful documentary on the destruction of a West Bank village, took home the documentary prize, its absence of distribution casting a shadow over its success.

In animation, Flow, the wordless Latvian cat film, continued its quiet but steady march toward Oscar night, winning Best International Film. And in television, Baby Reindeer dominated, with actors Richard Gadd, Jessica Gunning, and Nava Mau earning well-deserved recognition.

But the night wasn’t just about wins—it was about voices. Natasha Rothwell, creator of How to Die Alone, made an emotional plea for Black storytelling, while Nava Mau, standing tall as a trans actor, reminded the audience of their collective power. Even host Aidy Bryant couldn’t ignore reality, urging donations to help Los Angeles filmmakers affected by the wildfires.

And then there was Emma Stone. A powerhouse behind multiple nominated films, she sat teary-eyed in the audience as Jesse Eisenberg thanked her not just as a producer but as a fairy godmother who had lifted his career. It was a moment of quiet reverence in a night of independent triumphs.

With Anora cementing its place as a serious awards season heavyweight, all eyes now turn to the Oscars. Will the indie darling rise to claim the ultimate prize? The countdown begins.
